Rust is 5 today. It released on Steam on Dec 11, 2013. That’s half-a-decade of base building, raiding, sniping, skull cracking, and more. We’re celebrating with cake for everyone in-game. Wear that party hat with pride, too.
Sometimes I just know what I’m going to have as a header, and the second I spotted WAMBAMYEAH’s art on reddit was one of those times. It’s such a lovely, atmospheric piece of modeling that I wanted to print it out and hang it up.
I can just hear the tinkering sound, the burning of lamps and furnaces… oh, wait. I had the game running.
And here we are in the Electric Age. So long, Stone Age; farewell, Naked Caveman Atrocity Age. This is Rust of the future, where we all have pants and batteries.
And where we all need some help. A few How Tos have popped up. They’ll all cover roughly the same tracks, but the nature of these things means each has its own schtick.
DemoMan0351’s guide is an attempt to get a simple idea to you in less than 30 seconds.
Here’s the first of Malonik’ very practical series.
Here’s how Larry The RoleplayerTM built a working jail. It’s amazing.
And here’s MrMemeio’s guide to the basics. This is the best one yet, and you’ll learn a heck of a lot.

Yup, that’s the song in my head for the rest of the week. And yours, unless you play this.
Both xSalad_ and ciciocosmin turned to Rust for artistic inspiration this week, each crafting a cut-out style piece of art.
This is the most enduring form of Rust art. I wonder why?
When Welyn finds stories to tell in Rust the resulting video is always worth watching. Here he compares life with a formless team vs gaming with a decent group of players. It’s surprisingly sweet.
That thumbnail is also great.
It might look like the sort of video you’d see a blurry sasquatch running through, but TomiSepa made a working Pong game in Rust, with his friend Stek.
Here’s the ‘CPU’, GPU’, and ‘screen’.
That’s amazing.
Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Share your map designs, show off a game-mode from your server, let us see your cool base. And, of course, any electrical contraptions you’ve made.
There’s a dedicated forum, or you can fish for upvotes in the subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.
